NEWS AND VIEWS

Microbiology Education Expands Scope and Assumes New Title to Reflect Changes
Jeffrey Byrd, St. Mary’s College

From the Editor
“Summer ti-i-i-me, and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’, and the cotton is high…” (George and Ira Gershwin, Heyward DuBose, from “Porgy and Bess”).

Summer often provides a chance for reflection and review. Welcome to the third annual Summer Reviews Issue of FOME. This summer’s offerings include nine books, a CD-ROM and five DVDs, as well as four different websites. Our regular Journal Watch column and Web Watch columns will return in the fall.

Pick up a book for summer reading: Crab Wars (horseshoe crabs and much more!), Mountains Beyond Mountains (biography), The Power of Plagues (human health and history). Compare your pedagogy with What the Best College Teachers Do. Look for a new textbook, a problem-based lab manual, or reference.

Pop in a CD, such as the Parasitology photo atlas, or a DVD from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This year’s reviews include the Holiday Lectures for 2002 and 2003 as well as DVDs on Clockwork Genes, Sex Genes, and the Science of Fat.

Click on a website, such as MERLOT (doesn’t that sound relaxing!), or look for a Nobel Laureate. Or browse through the earlier issues of FOME with a click or two, taking advantage of the online nature of FOME. Finally, take note of changes to Microbiology Education.

Editorial Committee News.

Many thanks, Jacki, for all your help in the past. Marie Panec has agreed to join the editorial committee. Welcome, aboard, Marie, and thanks in advance for your assistance.

So, find a comfortable place to read or look at your screen, and click on!
