Collections in the MicrobeLibrary

Goals

The MicrobeLibrary initiative is grounded in its overall goal to promote excellence in undergraduate education by:

  • Publishing peer-reviewed teaching resources about the microbial world for undergraduate education
  • Advancing the ASM Curriculum Recommendations for undergraduate education
  • Promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning in microbiology education

Audience

The primary audience for the MicrobeLibrary is undergraduate faculty and students in the life sciences, particularly the microbiological sciences. However, graduate faculty and students using microbial techniques, teaching, or conducting research will find the library of value.

The MicrobeLibrary is a community-based resource. Faculty who develop innovative resources to teach microbiology at the undergraduate level may share their good works with other faculty by submitting them to the MicrobeLibrary. In this way, faculty members who use MicrobeLibrary resources and faculty members who author MicrobeLibrary resources come from the same community.

Content

The MicrobeLibrary is an online collection of peer-reviewed teaching resources for undergraduate microbiology education supported by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). MicrobeLibrary contains:

  • Atlas-Protocol Collection

The Atlas-Protocol Collection of the MicrobeLibrary was first envisioned at the 2004 ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE). The collection has two components: the Atlas and the Protocol. The Atlas includes a series of images that support the learning and use of a standard microbiology protocol.  The Protocol includes information pertinent to teaching undergraduate microbiology.

  • Focus on Microbiology Education
FOME is published four times a year and provides a venue for faculty to discuss issues in microbiology education, share practical and current activities for improving teaching and learning activities, and learn new teaching skills. The goal of the publicaton is to provide technical, yet practical and feasible advice, for improving teaching and learning in the microbiological sciences.
  • Curriculum Collection
The collection of curriculum resources provides classroom activities and laboratory exercises. The goal is to ensure that students are actively engaged in their own learning by providing inquiry-based field-tested materials, student-active learning activities, and ideas for projects or research approaches. All activities advance the ASM curriculum guidelines, include instructor notes and references, and provide opportunity for feedback.
  • Visual Collection
The collection of visual resources provides images, animations and video clippings for faculty and students to enhance their own understanding or classroom presentations about the microbial world. Visuals are annotated and include descriptions.
