Downloading Resources

DOWNLOADING RESOURCES

To download a still image, simply right click on the image and choose “save as” from the pop-up menu. You may then save the image on your hard-drive. Be sure to note the location on the drive you save the image to.

To download an animation or video, simply right click on the link and choose "save target as" from the pop-up menu.  You may then save the animation or video on your hard-drive. Be sure to note the location on the drive you save the image to.

Using Internet Explorer: Downloading Flash animation and Videos to your hard drive

A.Using Internet Explorer: Downloading a Flash animation to your hard drive

1. Go directly to http://www.microbelibrary.org. (DO NOT go to asm.org and click on the link to Microbelibrary! This won’t work if you want to download the file to your hard drive.)

2. Click on the animation you wish to download to your hard drive.

3. Start playing the animation so that it loads into the Temporary Internet Files of your computer.

4. Click on Tools.

5. Click on Internet Options.

6. Go down to Browsing history and click on Settings.

7. Click on View Files.

8. Look under the Type column. If the types are not listed in alphabetical order, click on Type. If they are in alphabetical order, do not click on Type.

9. Scroll down to the Shockwave Flash list and look for the html://www.microbelibrary file you viewed. (You can use the dates in the Last Accessed column at the right to more quickly find today’s viewing.)

10. Once you find the correct file, scroll all the way to the left to find the Name column. Select the .swf file for the animation and right click.

11. Copy the file and using Windows Explorer, paste it in a folder on your computer.

12. Go to that folder and right click on the .swf file that you saved. Click on Open With and then click on Internet Explorer. It should play (once you allow the browser to play blocked content).

13. If you are downloading an animation with buttons linking to a series of other animations, e.g. “The Productive Life Cycle of Animal Viruses” in ML, you will have to repeat the above instructions for each individual animation in the series.

B. Using Internet Explorer: Downloading a video to your hard drive

1. Go directly to http://www.microbelibrary.org. (DO NOT go to asm.org and click on the link to Microbelibrary! This won’t work if you want to download the file to your hard drive.)

2. Click on the video you wish to download to your hard drive.

11. Copy the file and using Windows Explorer, paste it in a folder on your computer.

12. Go to that folder and right click on the .mp4 file that you saved. Click on Open With and then click on either Internet Explorer or Quick Time Movie Player. It should play (once you allow the browser to play blocked content).

C. Using Firefox: Downloading animation/video to your hard drive

1. Go to http://www.microbelibrary.org/ and download and begin playing the animation/video.

2. Right click in any empty space on that page and select "View Page Info."

3. Select "Media" tab and look for the .swf file EMBED for the animation.

4. Highlight and click "Save As" button and save to your hard drive.

Please note: If the directions listed above do not work please check with your IT provider.  Your ability to download these files may be blocked for security reasons.
