In Memoriam - Linda Elaine Fisher, 1947-2002
It was with a great sense of sorrow that the microbiology community learned of the passing of Linda E. Fisher on August 13th, 2002. Dr. Fisher received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Kansas in 1974, and at the time of her death was Associate Professor of biology and microbiology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She had also served as a visiting scientist at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and as a visiting professor at Spelman College in Atlanta.

Fisher’s research virology and microbiology with special interest in emerging infectious diseases, including measles, West Nile virus and HIV. She was a national leader in the area of science education, and lectured widely to professional groups on ways to improve science teaching at the secondary and college levels and on ways to encourage women and minorities to pursue careers in science.

Linda was an active contributor to ASM’s microbiology education programs, most recently serving as an ad hoc reviewer for the Microbiology Education Journal, a reviewer for the visual resources component of the MicrobeLibrary, and an organizing committee member for the 2001 Undergraduate Microbiology Education Conference held in Orlando, Florida.

Paul Zitzewitz, chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences at UM-Dearborn commented, "Her teaching was characterized by deep concern for students’ learning and for their ability to write." Linda joined the faculty at UM-Dearborn as an assistant professor in 1978. She was promoted to associate professor in 1984.

Linda was also active in the area of women’s issues both at the university and in the community. Her efforts were recognized with the Susan B. Anthony Award from UM-Dearborn in 1988 and a mentoring award from the Detroit chapter of the Association for Women in Science.

Linda is survived by her spouse, Louis, and son, Jason. Her ready smile, generous spirit, and contributions to microbiology education will be sorely missed.

Contributions may be made to the University of Michigan-Dearborn to support students in the sciences. Checks may be sent to the Office of Institutional Advancement, Room 1040 Administration Building, 4901 Evergreen Road, Dearborn, Mich. 48128.
