From the Editor
This issue introduces the Biology Concept Inventory to the microbiology community, and invites our participation in building and using this important assessment tool. Also featured is an article from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Professor Jo Handelsman. She and co-author Sarah Lauffer outline the New Generation Program for Scientific Teaching that resulted from her $1 million HHMI award in 2002. We also have more about laboratory safety with a report from the American Biological Safety Association and a handy reference guide to BSL-1 and BSL-2 strains from Jacki Laxon and Erica Suchman. Finally, don’t miss our preview of articles from the new issue of Microbiology Education.
