From the Editor
Last year, FOME grew into a quarterly publication with the addition of a summer issue of “Back to School Educational Materials Reviews.” The issue was well received and sparked interest not only in the community of educators, but in the publishing arena as well. Both groups put forward suggestions for possible materials to be reviewed.
As you may know, ASM has established relationships with several publishers and has enjoyed their support as exhibitors at the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators. This year, the sponsorship program was expanded to include “Meet the Author Corners” in which publishers could showcase authors of recently published books, several of which are reviewed in this issue. Attendees enjoyed spending time with the authors and having these microbiology “superstars” autograph their books.
McGraw-Hill sponsored Denise G. Anderson, Microbiology: A Human Perspective and Marjorie Kelly Cowan, Microbiology : A Systems Approach. ASM Press highlighted Robert I. Krasner, The Microbial Challenge. Prentice Hall featured Michael Madigan, also a speaker at the meeting and co-author of Brock Biology of Microorganisms (11th Edition). Finally, Jones and Bartlett sponsored Jeffrey Pommerville, also a speaker and author of the seventh edition of Alcamo’s Fundamentals of Microbiology.
The Education Board will continue to work with publishers and educators by providing thoughtful and useful reviews of materials in the microbiological field. As you know, the entire issue of FOME is available in the MicrobeLibrary (www.microbelibrary.org). The individual reviews are also searchable in the library. We hope you enjoy this second summer issue!
